WESLEY EDENS: THE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS TYCOON BEHIND FORTRESS INVESTMENT GROUP

Born in 1961, Wes Edens is a successful New York-based businessman, investor and major sports team owner. He started his career with Lehman Brothers in 1987 as their partner and managing director and in 1993, he went to Blackrock as a partner and managing director. Wes was one of the co-founders who started Fortress Investment Group (Fortress) in 1998. In 2009, Wes became Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors. Edens went on to be chairman of Fortress acquired Springleaf Financial Services and Nationstar Mortgage. Below, we will recap several articles that discuss Wes’ acquisitions.

Wes Edens is mentioned in a May 2018 Patch.com article highlighting some of his time with Fortress. Fortress was the first company to have an IPO to go public as a large-scale private equity firm. Wes Edens was one of three founding members who sought to make Fortress different than other equity firms by providing an “alternative asset” strategy to it’s clients. Throughout its history, Fortress has made many key acquisitions including: RailAmerica, Penn National Gaming, and AIG. In 2017, Fortress was bought out by Softbank Group Corporation. Eden’s work with Fortress focused primarily in the Private Equity Division where his management style fitted with the success of his management of the private funds.

In a June 2018 article in Hitechchronicle.com, Wes Eden’s privately owned and operated Brightline Train system is highlighted which allows traveling between the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas much easier for commuters. Wes and Fortress Investment Group (now Softbank) plan to extend the train service to the Orlando area and eventually expand to the Atlanta and Chicago areas. It is forecasted that the new rail lines will add more business and developments to the surrounding routes along the commuter trains path.

Bloomberg reported in a July 2018 article the majority stake purchase of the Aston Villa soccer team by Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris. Chinese businessman Tony Xia will still remain on the team board. The Aston Villa team is looking to get back into the top ranked Premier League and the 55% stake purchased by both Edens and Sawiris is a step in the right direction for the team.
